We Weren’t Built To Be Alone

TogetherWhile watching an episode of Criminal Minds the other day, I was taken with one of the many brilliant quotes they insert throughout each episode.

“Love is our true destiny. We do not find the meaning of life by ourselves alone – we find it with another.” ― Thomas Merton, Love and Living

It got me thinking, the leads in this show are these incredibly successful and accomplished people in their field, one of them is an actual genius, a real live and breathing genius with an IQ off the charts and an eidetic memory that we would all be jealous of. Clearly each and every one of them is built to represent an ideal from different perspectives for each of us. Yet here they are, in the middle of this FBI investigation, profiling cold blood murderers, quoting love and not only that, but making the claim that we only find our meaning in life with another person and asserting that Love is our true destiny.

As much as I am the first promoter of love and I believe our life takes a whole new different meaning when love is present, I have to admit that the quote took me a little by surprise. At first it took me into the zone of maybe us being incomplete as human beings and needed love or needed another to fulfill our purpose. As I quickly stepped out of that thought, which really made no sense, I realized that everything we do or accomplish in life is worth nothing if we refuse to share it, if we hold everything so tight that nothing and no one can feel our love and our purpose in this world.

The truth is at the end of the day, we weren’t meant to be alone. We weren’t meant to come home to an empty house or share our nights with a cat or a dog, hug pillows at night, or talk to the TV. We were meant to love, to fulfill and share our love destiny in this world, to achieve higher purposes and goals together, basking in the support and the security that only love can bring to this world.

As you read these words right now, can you think of the countless times when love elevated your destiny and gave you a new reason to want more every day, to push forward and give it your best even on the days when you really didn’t feel like it? And can you also think of those big accomplishments that maybe you didn’t have anyone to share with? Did you feel them shrinking as you looked around and didn’t find the love you wanted? If so, maybe today is the day when you allow love to be your destiny and trust that everything else will fall into place.
