As we near the end of the year, I notice myself as well as most people around me looking to change various things in their lives. Either things that no longer serve us, things we want to do better, things that we’ve longed to accomplish yet postponed until now. There’s always a certain euphoria that pushes us forward this time of year as if just having that little boost will completely change all the goals we gave up on before. I remember at my favorite yoga studio in NY, January was always the busy months. So many people would sign up, ready to take on their health, change their minds and bodies. By the end of January things would get back to normal for us regulars and the influx would slow down. All those people who were looking for a quick and easy fix forgot one important thing. In order to move on to the next step, we must first accept where we are right now.
As we stand here making new lists, setting new goals, or maybe setting the old goals again, it’s important to realize that what we choose to let go of is also a part of us. Once we can accept that even the parts we don’t like, the ones we think are not as accomplished or as perfect as we want them to be, are part of us, only then we can have the courage to let go of them, to move forward, to acknowledge the past, embrace the present, and happily look forward towards the future.
When we make our lists, our vision boards, and our resolutions for 2015, let’s remember to embrace 2014 for all it brought us, all the good, all the bad, all the pleasant and the unpleasant, the love and the heartbreaks, the happy and the sad. Only then will we move forward with love, forgiveness, and joy in the New Year.
