The Power Of Secrets

ChristopherPoindexter“And when at last you find someone to whom you feel you can pour out your soul, you stop in shock at the words you utter— they are so rusty, so ugly, so meaningless and feeble from being kept in the small cramped dark inside you so long.” ― Sylvia Plath, The Unabridged Journals of Sylvia Plath

We all have secrets, we keep them closely guarded, we bury them in the dark corners of our souls until we, ourselves forget about them. At least for a while…if we’re lucky enough they never see the light of day, but more often than not, every secret that actually matters will be revealed for all the good and the bad that comes with it. Sometimes secrets are revealed and they end up healing people and relationships, other times they are revealed to destroy everything in their path.

But the power of the secrets is not in how well we can keep them, how much we can hide them – unless we’re talking about some well devised surprise that is meant to bring joy to the people we love. Their power is revealed as Sylvia Plath said in finding that person that we can reveal them to, that person in front of whom we can stand naked and vulnerable, open and raw, reveal our secrets, the deep dark corners of our soul, and know that they will never change the way they look at us, trust that they will still love us, that they will take us in their arms and give us permission to never have to keep secrets again.

Do you have a person in your life like that? A person in front of whom you are willing to reveal anything, who takes down the walls, not by force, but by love. And more importantly are we willing to do that for another person? To allow them to be who they are, who they’ve been, and support them to be who they want to be, without faltering in our love, in our smile when we look at them, if the light in our eyes when they’re happy?
