“After all, trust is greater than love, and to truly trust another human-being is rare. Love can exist without trust, but trust cannot exist without love.” – Sammy Sutton, King Solomon’s Journey
I keep thinking about the whole Clark Kent, Superman and Lois Lane triangle ever since I had a conversation about it with a good friend. He is utterly and completely in love with Lois, yet he’s living this double life and lying to her every day about who he really is. It got me thinking about all the times in life when we love someone with all our hearts, yet we can’t bring ourselves to be completely honest with them. We tell ourselves that we’re just protecting them, but the reality is that we are protecting ourselves. We don’t know if they will love us if they knew the whole truth and we can’t bring ourselves to trust that they will.
As much as I love Superman and believe in a lot of things that he stands for, I do believe he got this one all wrong. He is the hero of all heroes; the one we all aspire to be, regardless of where we grew up and what our local heroes were. He stands for justice, integrity, loyalty, truth, freedom he is human, but at a whole different level, yet he taught us something completely incorrect about love and trust in love.
If you look at your life right now, are you acting just like Superman? Are you open and honest or do you live a double life hiding a big part of you from the people you love the most? Isn’t it time, you trusted the people you love? Isn’t it time you allowed them to love you for exactly who you are?
